Amateur sleuth Sheridan Hendley and her detective husband Brett McMann are looking forward to some calming down time. They rent a cabin to enjoy nature, hike the trails into the adjacent state park, and have some quiet adult time. No sooner do they hike their first trial and all too quickly their plans are derailed by the appearance of a small Maltese. He’s persistent and leads them to an injured couple and a lifeless body.
The woman is conscious and shares her tale of how she and her partner happened on a large man as he dumped the woman’s body. Interestingly, she’s also an amateur sleuth and her partner is also a detective. Sheridan and Brett make the necessary calls for emergency personnel. Only in the rural area surrounding the state park, there’s not a lot of police support. Brett, a State Police detective, gets roped into the case, along with his usual partner to find the killer. The hike up the mountain was challenging enough, but the trail left by the killer is filled with twists, turns, and danger.
A partial crossover of the Stacie Maroni Mysteries with the Sheridan Hendley Mysteries, this is a stand-alone mystery.
Potential Triggers: Murder, violence that’s mostly off the page, online dating dangers. No graphic descriptions, no profanity but insinuation of same.
